STUDY GUIDE — FIVE PHASE THEORY

Five-Phase Pathology

A full-color reference chart mapping how Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water phases generate, control and destabilize one another — built for fast lookup at the treatment table.

IN THE ROOM

Built for the treatment room, not the textbook

Practitioners keep this chart mounted where patient intake happens — a fast visual to walk a patient through why a Liver pattern shows up as a Spleen complaint, without reaching for a book mid-consult.

Printed on heavyweight stock, 24×36in, ready to frame.

WHO IT'S FOR

Reviewed by working acupuncturists

Every Acupuncture Charts release is checked against clinical practice before it ships — the terminology, phase pairings, and cycle arrows match what students are tested on and what clinicians use every day.

QUESTIONS

Five-Phase Pathology FAQ

What is the Five-Phase (Five Element) theory?

A framework in Chinese medicine that groups the body's organs, emotions, tissues, and seasons into five phases — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — and describes how they generate and restrain one another.

What's the difference between the Generating and Controlling cycles?

The Generating (Sheng) cycle shows each phase nourishing the next in sequence, like a mother feeding a child. The Controlling (Ke) cycle shows each phase keeping another in check, preventing any one phase from overwhelming the system.

What does 'overacting' or 'insulting' mean on the chart?

These are pathological versions of the normal cycles — a phase controlling another too strongly (overacting), or a phase pushing back against the one that should control it (insulting), both signs of imbalance.

Who is this chart designed for?

Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine students preparing for board exams, and licensed practitioners who want a fast visual reference during patient consults.

What size is the printed chart?

24 by 36 inches, printed on heavyweight stock, designed to be framed and mounted in a treatment or consult room.

Does it include tongue and pulse correlations?

Yes — diagnostic references for tongue coating and pulse quality are printed at the base of the chart alongside the phase relationships.
